I admit, I was at the library looking for a book by Ann Patchett and I was attracted to the cover of this book. What a great drawing and such bright colors. I knew nothing about this “Discworld”. When I brought the book home SB knew all about it. I guess it carries some popularity with those in the sci-fi / fantasy know. Though SB had never read any Discworld books.
The idea behind Discworld, which has 35 published novels and is still growing, is that it is a fantasy series with comedy, a lot of comedy. The author obviously enjoys his characters and knows them well. He took me along on a tall tale with the right doses of action, adventure, heroism and comedy.
This is the kind of book that makes a good counterpoint to heavier reading. I would seriously consider taking more Discworld books along on vacations to the beach or trips with friends. You don’t need to give this book your all, it just happily leads you along.
